The Ahafo Region has witnessed a historic step towards strengthening traditional governance structures as the sod was officially cut for the construction of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs Office Complex.
The ceremony, held at the forecourt of the Ahafo Regional Co-ordinating Council (AhRCC) on Tuesday 30th September, 2025, brought together traditional leaders (Nananom), government officials, officials of Newmont Africa and other stakeholders to mark the beginning of the much-anticipated project.
Delivering his address on behalf of Nananom, Nana Barima Twereku III, President of the Ahafo Regional House
of Chiefs, expressed heartfelt appreciation to Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner, the Ahafo Regional Minister and
Newmont Africa, the sponsor of the project. He highlighted that the initiative represents the fulfillment of a longstanding dream of Nananom in the region. According to him, the construction of a modern office complex will
not only provide a conducive working environment for chiefs but will also strengthen the institution’s ability to
preserve culture, resolve disputes, and contribute to the region’s development agenda.
He also assured stakeholders of Nananom’s full support and co-operation towards the successful completion of the project.
On behalf of Newmont Africa, Mr. Abraham Agbozo, Head of External Relations and Social Performance,reiterated the company’s commitment to partnering with the people of Ahafo in sustainable development.
He confirmed that Newmont is fully financing the project and assured the gathering that the office complex is
expected to be completed by December 2025. He noted that this investment forms part of Newmont’s broader social responsibility to support institutions that foster peace, stability, and progress within its host communities.
In her address, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner, described the sod-cutting as a
significant milestone in the history of the Ahafo Region. She noted that the construction of the Ahafo Regional
House of Chiefs Office Complex is not only a response to a long-standing request from Nananom but also a demonstration of Newmont’s commitment to strengthening the chieftaincy institution.
She emphasized that chieftaincy remains a vital pillar in Ghana’s governance system, particularly in ensuring peace, unity and social cohesion. According to her, the new office complex will provide a befitting space for the chiefs to carry out their administrative duties, hold meetings, and deliberate on matters affecting the region.
Hon. (Mrs.) Gardiner further commended Newmont Ghana, for their invaluable support and partnership. She
explained that such corporate collaborations are crucial in complementing government’s efforts to deliver development that directly impacts the lives of citizens. She therefore called on other corporate institutions to
emulate Newmont’s example by investing in initiatives that promote culture,stability and socio-economic growth.
Hon. (Mrs.) Gardiner also seized the occasion to appeal to NEWMONT Ghana to extend its support to the health
sector by helping the region establish a Regional Hospital and a medical stores facility. She emphasized that quality healthcare remains one of the top priorities of the region, and such an intervention would go a long way
in improving health delivery for the people of Ahafo.
The Regional Minister concluded by assuring Nananom and the people of Ahafo of government’s continued support. She expressed confidence that, upon completion, the office complex would enhance the operations of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs and strengthen the bond between traditional authority, government, and the people.
