The Nana Bosomprah Astroturf in Goaso, the Regional capital of the Ahafo Region, came alive on Thursday, 1st May, 2025, as hundreds of workers, public servants and stakeholders converged for the 4th Edition of the Ahafo May Day Fun Games which was held under the auspices of the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council and the National Sports Authority.
The annual event, organized as part of the International Workers’ Day or Workers Day of Solidarity (popularly called May Day) commemorations, brought together over 10 participating teams from various public institutions, including the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Police Service (GPS), Ghana Health Service (GHS), Forestry Commission (FC), the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Coalition of Media Houses, Ghana Immigration Service (GHS) and the Ahafo Regional Co-ordinating Council (Ahafo RCC), among others.



This year’s edition was held under the theme “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: the Role of Stakeholders”, emphasizing the need to prioritize adequate compensation and decent working conditions for our workers.
As defending champions from the 2024 edition, the Ahafo RCC participated with vigor and a strong sense of leadership. Their presence reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to promoting not only regional development but also the welfare and morale of the workforce operating in various sectors in the Region and contributing their mites to the overall progress. The RCC team competed in various sporting disciplines including football, tug-of-war, volleyball, and athletics. Although they did not retain their championship title, their teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship won the admiration of many.




Speaking on behalf of the Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr. Sampson Amoako Kwarteng, the Chief Director of Ahafo RCC, praised the dedication and energy of all participating teams.
The highlight of the day was the final football match in which the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) triumphed over fierce competition from Ghana Health Service (GHS) to emerge as champions of the 2025 May Day Games. Their win was met with thunderous applause and celebrations from their colleagues and the evercheering supporters.
GNFS’s performance throughout the tournament was a resplendent display of discipline, strategy and unity, which are qualities that reverberates their professional mandate in promoting fire safety and quick emergency response.
In presenting the trophy to the winners, Mr. Kwarteng extended heartfelt congratulations to the GNFS team, on behalf of the Hon. Regional Minister. He noted that beyond the medals and competition, the Ahafo May Day Fun Games served a deeper purpose which was the fostering of the spirit of camaraderie, relieving stress, encouraging fitness and enhancing inter-agency collaboration across the region.
Spectators and participants enjoyed musical performances while food vendors and hawkers also took advantage of the gathering, turning the Astroturf into a bustling hub of social and economic activity.


As the dust settles on this year’s games, stakeholders are already looking forward to 2026. The growing participation and enthusiasm signal a strong and united workforce that values both hard work and healthy recreation.
In the words of one participant from the Ahafo RCC team (the Rights to Information Officer, Mr. Theophilus Nti-Antwi) who spoke to the Media, he said, “We may not have won the trophy, but we won friendships, memories and a renewed sense of belongingness.”
