The Ahafo Regional Office of the Information Services Department (ISD) has successfully concluded a three-day regional gun amnesty campaign aimed at enhancing public safety and promoting peaceful coexistence across the region.
The campaign, which commenced on Wednesday, 28th January and ended on Friday, 30th January, 2026, was carried out in all six districts of the Ahafo Region. It sought to educate the public on the dangers associated with the possession of illegal firearms and to encourage individuals in unlawful possession of guns and ammunition to surrender them voluntarily without fear of prosecution during the amnesty period.
Speaking during the campaign, the Ahafo Regional Information Officer, Mr. Kombat Bassum Maxwell, emphasized that the exercise formed part of a broader national effort to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. He cautioned that after the amnesty period, anyone found in possession of illegal firearms would face severe legal consequences, including a possible jail term of up to ten years.
Mr. Maxwell also urged Information Officers and field staff in the various districts to intensify public education within their communities to ensure the message of the amnesty reached all segments of the population. He stressed that community cooperation is critical to sustaining peace and security in the region.
The ISD reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with security agencies, traditional authorities, and community leaders to maintain law and order, and called on residents to continue supporting initiatives that promote safety and development in the Ahafo Region.
