AHAFO RCC HOSTS TRAINING ON REGIONAL SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK

As a progressive step toward sustainable regional growth and responsible spatial development within its jurisdiction, the Ahafo Regional Co-ordinating Council (AhRCC) has organized a one (1)-day capacity-building workshop on the preparation and implementation of the Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF). The training took place on Wednesday, 7th May 2025, at the AhRCC Conference Hall in Goaso.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from all six (6) Municipal and District Assemblies in the region, including Municipal and District Physical and Development Planning Officers, the Regional Co-ordinating Director, and representatives from the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA). The training focused on the spatial planning model of Ghana, the three-tier planning system, the scope of the Spatial Development Framework, and data requirements critical for its successful implementation.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Director of the Ahafo RCC, Mr. Sampson Amoako Kwarteng, who spoke on behalf of the Hon. Regional Minister, welcomed participants and facilitators. He emphasized that the workshop was not just a regulatory requirement but a strategic opportunity to align development efforts with the real needs of the people. He commended the
leadership and vision of Mr. Chapman Owusu-Sekyere, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of LUSPA, for his continued efforts to promote organized development in Ghana.

Mr. Chapman Owusu-Sekyere delivered an insightful presentation on Ghana’s spatial planning model and the three-tier planning system—comprising the national, regional, and local levels. He explained that the model promotes sustainable development, ensures orderly land use and supports environmental protection. He noted that improved co-ordination through this structure has enabled more targeted and sustainable regional development.

Madam Ama Boadu from LUSPA elaborated on the scope of Ghana’s Spatial Development Framework, highlighting its key components: the National Spatial Development Framework, structure plans, and local plans. She underscored the importance of collaboration and co-ordination among stakeholders to ensure successful implementation and long-term benefits for communities.

The final session, led by Madam Sarah Gyogluu, also of LUSPA, focused on data requirements necessary for the effective preparation of the RSDF. She emphasized the need for accurate demographic, environmental, economic, infrastructure, land use and socio-economic data to support informed decision-making and sustainable planning outcomes.

The workshop was highly interactive and equipped participants with the requisite knowledge and tools to support the formulation and execution of Spatial Development Frameworks at the district and regional levels.

The Ahafo RCC continues to demonstrate its commitment to structured and inclusive development planning as a cornerstone of regional transformation.
