Hon. George Boakye, Minister of Ahafo Region, has once again referred to the region as the country’s “food basket.” On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, the Minister made this statement during his turn at the Ministers’ Press Briefing organized by the Ministry of Information in Accra.
“The food season has arrived. The region generates a lot of food (such as plantains, maize, and other staple crops).”According to Hon. George Boakye, He also stated that one of the main challenges confronting farmers in the region is lack of buyers, and thus appealed to Ghanaians and prospective investors abroad to take advantage of the massive influx of food to export it outside and earn the necessary foreign exchange.
The Minister again highlighted a number of projects undertaken by the government in the region since its creation in 2019. He spoke on three main thematic areas; Governance, Health and Education. He showed comprehensive and impressive pictures of physical structures that have been built since the region came into being in 2019.
The minister talked about the main Regional Co-ordinating Council Administration block at Goaso, Regional Education Directorate, Office Complex, and residential accommodation in Bechem; the Regional Health Directorate and Office Complex in Hwidiem; the Maternity Ward at Bomaa Hospital; the CHPS Compound at Rubi and Adengo; and staff quarters for health employees at Dwomo. These projects are at various stages of completion and are spread in all parts of the region.

Furthermore, Mr. Boakye stated that through the Free Senior High School Programme under the education sector, 42,725 pupils had been enrolled in 22 different schools, including technical and vocational education and training.
He again stated that the government began building a new Senior High School (Science and Technology) at Akrodie in 2020 using funds from the GET Fund and that the project is “well progressed.”
In order to improve access to postsecondary education in the region, the Hon. Minister further stated that the Ahafo Region has been chosen for the establishment of a STEM university. “So far, the site has been obtained thanks to the Omanhene of Goaso’s kindness. The Ministry of Education is currently finalizing the arrangements required for the initiative to start, the official stated.
