AHAFO RCC HOSTS PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT

As part of their constitutional oversight responsibilities, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment paid a courtesy call on the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council (AhRCC) on Friday, 25th April 2025. The visit was aimed at addressing pressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainable development in the region.

The Chief Director of the AhRCC, Mr. Sampson Amoako Kwarteng, warmly welcomed the delegation on behalf of the Hon. Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner. In his remarks, he expressed optimism about the visit, emphasizing the critical need for strong collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders, especially in the context of the government’s reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day initiative which is to be observed every month.

Mr. Kwarteng highlighted several key issues affecting sanitation service delivery in the region, including infrastructural limitations, logistical constraints, and the need for increased public education and awareness. He expressed confidence that through collective effort and innovation, these challenges could be addressed to improve outcomes across the sector.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Yaw Frimpong Addo, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting government initiatives that enhance environmental health and sanitation in the Ahafo Region.
Commenting on the challenges faced by the Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP), a major private player in the sector, Mr. Addo noted the committee’s readiness to offer legislative support. “We will work closely with IRECOP to identify areas where legislative backing can make a meaningful impact,” he said. He added that this may include reviewing existing laws and regulations to create a more enabling environment for IRECOP and similar organizations.

Mr. Addo concluded by stressing the importance of co-operation among all stakeholders. “We will facilitate dialogue between IRECOP, local communities, and key partners to ensure that we are all working toward a shared goal,” he stated.
The meeting also brought together representatives from IRECOP and Zoomlion Company Ltd, fostering valuable discussions on how to collectively improve environmental management in the region.
