The Ahafo Region has taken a significant step towards transforming its local economy with the signing of contracts for the construction of 24-Hour Economy Model Markets across all the Municipal and District Assemblies.
The brief but impactful ceremony, attended by key stakeholders, marked the official commencement of a flagship initiative aimed at expanding economic opportunities, creating jobs and improving livelihoods in the Region. Speaking at the event, the Regional Minister, on behalf of the Regional Co-ordinating Council, expressed appreciation to all partners whose collective efforts made the milestone possible.
The project forms part of Government’s broader 24-hour economy policy, a strategic intervention designed to maximise productivity by enabling continuous economic activity. It aligns with the vision of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development across the country.
According to the Minister, the model markets will provide modern, safe and well-organised trading environments that support round-the-clock commercial activity. Beyond improving access to goods and services, the facilities are expected to enhance revenue generation, support small and medium-scale enterprises and strengthen linkages between producers and consumers.
He further highlighted that the construction phase alone will create employment opportunities for artisans, contractors and suppliers, while the completed markets will serve as vibrant hubs of economic activity. The initiative is also expected to improve sanitation, security and orderliness in trading centres, while promoting dignity among traders by providing conducive working conditions. Describing the project as more than just infrastructure development, the Minister emphasised that it represents
the fulfilment of a key government commitment to the people. He noted that expectations are high and called on all implementing actors to rise to the occasion.
Consultants were urged to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, diligence and integrity in supervising the works, while contractors were tasked to deliver quality outputs within stipulated timelines and in strict adherence to safety standards.
Municipal and District Assemblies were also directed to ensure that project sites are adequately prepared to facilitate smooth commencement of works and to maintain close monitoring throughout the implementation phase.
The Regional Co-ordinating Council, in collaboration with relevant agencies, will provide oversight to ensure that the projects are delivered efficiently and in line with their intended objectives. The ceremony concluded with a strong sense of optimism, as stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to the successful execution of the project, which is expected to significantly reshape the economic landscape of the Ahafo Region.
