As part of the Government of Ghana’s commitment to environmental cleanliness, sustainability, and public well-being, the government, under the able leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has reintroduced the National Sanitation Day initiative. This nationwide exercise, to be observed on the first Saturday of every month, aims to enhance sanitation and hygiene across the country.
To align with this initiative, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner, convened a stakeholder meeting on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Ahafo Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) Conference Room. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Municipal and District Co-ordinating
Directors, Municipal and District Environmental Health Officers, officials from Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, representatives of the Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP), and other relevant partners to strategize for the implementation of the Sanitation Day across all six districts in Ahafo.

Welcoming participants, Mr. Sampson Amoako Kwarteng, Chief Director of the Ahafo RCC, emphasized the importance of collaborative planning to ensure a successful and impactful sanitation exercise. He encouraged all stakeholders to fully participate in the upcoming event, stressing that its success depended on the collective commitment of all involved.
In her address to the meeting, Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner highlighted the critical role of the National Sanitation Day in promoting environmental cleanliness and preventing sanitation-related diseases such as cholera and malaria. She further noted that improved sanitation would boost tourism and local economic development, thereby benefiting residents and communities in the region.
According to the Hon. Regional Minister, the national launch of the initiative will be officially led by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025, followed by the first observance of the remodeled National Sanitation Day on Saturday, 5th April, 2025.

Hon. (Mrs.) Gardiner also announced an incentive scheme to encourage participation, stating that the cleanest city in Ghana will be awarded after six months of the program’s implementation. She expressed confidence that Ahafo Region would compete favourably and strive to emerge as the winner. She urged all stakeholders to actively engage in the exercise and work together to position Ahafo as a model region for sanitation excellence.
In her closing remarks, the Ahafo Regional Minister called on all stakeholders to fully commit to the initiative and uphold high sanitation standards in the region.
Zoomlion Ghana Ltd and IRECOP, as key sanitation service providers, pledged their full support and commitment to the initiative by providing the necessary logistics and resources to facilitate its smooth implementation.
