ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC HOSPITAL HOSTS THE NATIONAL LAUNCH OF THE 33RD WORLD DAY OF THE SICK

In a profound demonstration of compassion, faith and commitment to human dignity, St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem hosted the national launch of the 33rd World Day of the Sick on Friday, 4th April, 2025. The event which was held under the theme “Hope Does Not Disappoint” (Romans 5:5) – But Strengthens Us in Times of Trial, was graced by the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner.
The World Day of the Sick is a global observance initiated by the Catholic Church to raise awareness about the plight of the sick and those who care for them. This annual event serves as a reminder of the Church’s mission to provide compassionate healthcare, especially to the most vulnerable and marginalized in society.

The Catholic Health Service Trust (Head Office), in collaboration with St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital, brought together stakeholders from the health, religious, and civic communities. The occasion reaffirmed the Church’s unwavering commitment to its healing ministry and underscored the values of empathy, compassion, hope and service to humanity.
Hon. (Mrs.) Charity Gardiner attended the event in support of the cause. While acknowledging the significant role played by the Catholic Church in the development of educational institutions and healthcare facilities, in the country, she expressed her gratitude for the Church’s continued partnership with the state. She further stressed the importance of collective efforts in promoting dignity and respect not only for the sick but for humanity as a whole.

In the same vein, she announced that government was also in the process of initiating interventions that would promote universal healthcare for all citizens. She mentioned that to support healthcare professionals, there are plans to reward healthcare workers who accept posting to rural communities and underserved areas with a decent rural allowance of 20% of their basic salary.
Also Hon. Gardiner stated government’s intention to establish the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (MAHAMACARES) programme to support the cost of health care for persons with chronic diseases. She further stressed governments plan to establish a medical school within the former Brong Ahafo region (Bono, Bono East and Ahafo). According to her, all these, among other important interventions, are efforts to improve the health of the people for the attainment of better lives.
She assured the attendees of her enduring support and collaboration to continue delivering essential social services to the people of the region. Hon. (Mrs.) Gardiner also assured the public that her office remains open for future partnerships in advancing the well-being of the society.
